Off-road systems

UTV racing punishes every part of the vehicle, and few components take more punishment than the transmission belt — left unwatched, a belt that overheats can fail outright and end a race. AiM built the Infrared Belt Temperature System (IBTS) to keep a constant eye on that risk.

The kit pairs a gauge with an infrared sensor, built to be reliable, easy to fit, clearly visible in any light and tough enough for a harsh environment.

The gauge shows the temperature live and logs a reading to internal memory every ten seconds for later review, together with the supply voltage; a Warning and an Alarm threshold can each be set, with the display turning white below Warning, yellow above it, and red with a blinking LED once the Alarm level is crossed.

The last 25 tests, each between two minutes and five hours long, can be pulled back up from the gauge's own display.

MX UTV is AiM's dash logger built specifically for the off-road world. It reads and displays ECU data, transmission-belt temperature via its included infrared sensor, and GPS information — speed, position, time of day and lap times to 1/100 second — through a built-in GPS module.

Selecting the vehicle brand and type from the dash menu lets it read the right ECU data set: Polaris RZR (speed, RPM, gear, coolant temperature, throttle position, brake switch, fuel rate), Polaris RZR Turbo (adds boost pressure and charge-air temperature), CAN-AM (speed, RPM, gear, coolant temperature, throttle position, brake switch, instant fuel flow), CAN-AM Turbo (adds boost pressure and intake air temperature), Yamaha YXZ 2016 (speed, RPM, gear, coolant temperature), Yamaha YXZ 2017 (adds throttle position and brake switch) and Arctic Cat Wildcat (speed, RPM, gear, coolant temperature, throttle position, brake switch).

Belt temperature reads directly on the display via the included infrared sensor, with two RGB alarm LEDs lighting up as the reading nears critical; five LEDs across the top can be set to act as a gear shift light or a predictive lap timer.

A wide LCD display offers a freely configurable RGB backlight in 8 colours with an automatic light sensor. The built-in GPS module recognises the track automatically, calculates lap times and position, and learns new tracks on its own; 4 GB of internal memory logs several thousand hours of ECU, belt-temperature and GPS data, downloaded over Wi-Fi to a PC for analysis in RaceStudio 3.

LCU Series lambda controllers and SmartyCam Series cameras can both be added over its built-in CAN bus, the former for tuning and the latter for video overlay.
